excerpt

As I lock the door Tyrese and one of The Isley Brothers are extolling the virtues of having a girl who loves them. Why the fuck did he think it was a good idea to team up with Tank and Ginuwine? Something small and soft touches my forearm and I barely resist the urge to jump a mile because, what the fuck, I see a hand. A hand with long, slender fingers and neon pink nail polish, sharp in its contrast to the smooth, mahogany skin. I follow an arm covered by a leather jacket to a face with big brown eyes, stretched wide as they look up at me, a small nose, and luscious lips. Her brown eyes are surrounded by long, dark lashes and arched eyebrows. They’re beautiful. She could be beautiful. She’s not though. There’s something blocking it and against my better judgment I want to know what it is. A beanie covers her head, but short black hair peeks out from one side. Those luscious lips move and I remember I still have my headphones on, but I also remember that since Janae, I hate being touched. I should really go talk to someone about these issues I’m having, but I’m a guy. Soooooo . . . I look back down at the hand that’s still on my forearm and she quickly pulls it back before dropping her gaze to the ground. I slip my headphones off just as she speaks again.

“I’m sorry. I was trying to ask you about the gym, but I knew you couldn’t hear me.”

And Junior has decided he likes her fucking voice. Soft and sweet and conveying utter innocence, even with her mumbling like she’s scared out of her mind. I would contribute that to my size, but she’s pretty tall for a chick. I’d say about 5’ 9” at least. Not to mention that chicks seem to be more turned on by my size than afraid of it. Being bigger means I can protect them. Not her though. I expect her to run for safety at any moment. She hasn’t made eye contact since I initially turned to her and she’s fidgeting. I take in her clothes, which look like they could be expensive, and I notice that she’s skinny as hell. No hips, no ass, no tits, just slim and athletic. So why in the hell is Junior stepping up to full throttle? The icing on the cake? I feel beads of pre-cum. Eleven months dry as the desert and this timid little boy-girl is un-manning me. That gets my blood boiling and for a second causes me to question my masculinity, which is totally unacceptable. Did I just say totally? This girl is destroying my vibe.

“What the fuck are you doing creeping around here this late at night?”

She squeaks. Literally jumps a foot in the air and squeaks like a scared little mouse. Granted, I did snap at her, but come on. Really? I glance around the parking lot and around the building. She can’t be out here by herself, but there is no one else and I don’t even see a car. When I look back at her, she’s hugging herself and slowly backing away. I reach out and grab her by both arms and she whimpers, her face a mask of terror. What the fuck?

“Please,” she begs. “I’m s-sorry. I-I only wanted to ask about the gym. I’ll leave. I promise.”

“You think I’m going to hurt you?” I try to keep the growl from my voice, but I can’t. Everything about this girl is irking the fuck out of me. Why would I want to hurt her and why in the hell is she so scared when she sought me out? She shrugs her shoulders in answer and although she tries to cower away, she doesn’t physically try to get free. Now I’m upset and confused. Either she’s scared or she isn’t. “I’m not going to hurt you. I’m going to let you go and you’re not going to run, okay? You’re going to tell me what you’re doing out here and why you’re alone.” She nods her head in agreement and I let her go. She keeps her eyes trained on the ground and that gets to me even more.

“How’d you get here?”

“I walked . . . from the bus.”

“Why?” The bus stop is roughly a quarter-mile from here. This isn’t a bad neighborhood, I made sure of that when I picked the location, but she’s a female and no place is really safe for her to be alone at night. But shit, why do I even care? Why does her being here, alone, unsafe, bother me so much?

“The gym.”

Captain Obvious. Of course she’s here for the gym. She’s literally at the gym. And why is she still mumbling? “Why?”

“I looked online. It said you have self-defense classes.”

At no point would I have considered that to be her reason. She’s asking about self-defense classes and yet she’s here alone this late at night. She risks a glance at me just as a pick-up truck pulls into the parking space in front of where we stand. I groan because I know that as scared as she is, it’s about to get ten times worse.

excerpt

The sun begins to set, doing its best to outperform us. More tourists gather around me, their awestruck enthusiasm pushing me forward. As usual, I give them my best, everything I have to offer them, before the sinking sun devours it.

With my knives in hand, I start to juggle. Their applause and shouts draw in more people.

“Oh, shit!” I call out, widening my eyes. “I haven’t learned how to stop yet.”

My crowd grows, but with Devin standing in the front, next to Owen and Vianella, he’s easy to spot. After I put my knives away, I gesture for Devin to help me with my show. Together, we go through easy balancing tricks and, when Devin follows my cartwheel with an effortless handstand, Owen’s mouth curves into a cocky smirk. He claps louder than anyone else and gives his son a thumbs-up when Devin turns to him.

“Show-off,” I sign, narrowing my eyes to make Devin giggle. “Go get your own show.” With thunderous applause from my audience, I usher him away.

In my shows, I create a journey, consisting of a beginning, a middle, and an end. The persistent end that steals the mystical bewilderment.

Inscrutable, glamorous, and maybe imaginary.

But I feel as if it’s there. In my juggling. While I ride the unicycle. As I connect with strangers. There’s satisfaction and appreciation. Letting me know I matter, that I’m not invisible.

Dusk kisses the horizon, setting the bay behind me ablaze.

And there she is. The bewitching girl with the violet eyes. She stands out, like a bolt of fiery lightning. The shooting star that swims across the night sky.

She’s there. Watching me. Enchanting me.

Her laughter echoes in my ears, the feverish ringlets curling into my gut. The dazzling display of her delight sets Mallory on fire. Striking and luminous, I escape into the living moment of her bliss. And I leave behind the tremulous shadows of my father and what his return means to my life.

EXCERPT:

Ignite (Midnight Fire Book One)

Tristan finished reading his lines. “Hey, Juliet, it’s your turn.” He smirked.

“Oh, right.” She looked down at her book. “‘O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art though Romeo.’” She tried to copy his apathetic style of reading and was secretly overjoyed when he laughed at her.

“I get it, I sounded like an idiot.” She just continued giving him the same silent treatment he had given her. “Okay, here’s the truth, Kira. We can’t talk here, and we shouldn’t even be talking now, or maybe ever.”

“You told me that already.” She stopped reading.

“Yet, you seem to have trouble understanding it. English is your first language, right?” She rolled her eyes at the joke. “Like I said before, we just can’t ever be.”

“I understand what you’re saying, but I also know you don’t mean it.” She leaned closer to him to prevent from being overheard.

“I do,” he said, forcing the point.

“Oh really?” she tried to push him now. “It didn’t seem that way when you kissed me.”

“Kira, forget that ever happened, okay?”

“Or what? You don’t scare me.”

“I should,” he said and shot Kira a lethal look.

His eyes changed color to the lightest blue she could imagine, and they held her captive. Not in the romantic way, but as though she were a prisoner held paralyzed. His eyes were ice cold, making her shiver as though she had been dropped in an arctic pool, and slowly his pupils began to expand, overtaking his irises.

Kira was scared, but more than that, she felt like he knew it and didn’t care. Try as she might, she couldn’t look away—completely stuck. Slowly, a feeling of warmth spread to her hands, burning hot, a sense of power that fought the fear tightening her stomach in knots.

Whipping her gaze to the floor, Kira breathed heavy as she finally broke his stare. Her fingertips still tingled with the heat that had coursed through her, allowing her to break his gaze. Kira leaned back against her chair, away from him, and touched her fingers to her cheek.

They burned into her skin.

“What the hell was that?” she asked unsteadily, still not looking up. The heat emanating from her hand absorbed all of Kira’s thoughts.

“Me,” he said with the venom gone from his voice. She looked at him again and caught the unbearably sad expression in his eyes before he looked away.

Or me? she thought, feeling the warmth finally ebb.

excerpt

“Shh,” I hissed. “You have to be quiet. Collin can’t know you’re here. I didn’t tell him, and he might get pissed and kick you out.”

The small, pathetic whimper tugged at my heart, and I reached down to pick the squirming bundle of fur off my bedroom floor, tucking her close to my chest. “It’s okay,” I cooed to the puppy. “I’ll talk him around. Don’t worry.”

It probably would have been smart to discuss adopting a puppy with my roommate before I actually went to the SPCA and got him, but obviously, I wasn’t making the best decisions as of late. I still hadn’t been one hundred percent decided when I stopped by the shelter, but when I walked past her cage and saw her sad, lonely eyes staring up at me, I just couldn’t help myself. She looked how I felt. It was fate. I knew she was destined to be my puppy, so I didn’t hesitate. I adopted her right then. I just hoped Collin didn’t completely lose his shit when he finally discovered my little secret.

She whimpered again and stretched her neck out to lick the underside of my jaw. “You hungry, baby girl?” I giggled when her little puppy teeth started nipping at my chin. I placed her on the floor and pulled out the doggie bowl I’d just purchased — along with a shit ton of other puppy items — and dumped in a scoop of dog food. Picking up the matching water bowl, I stood and headed for the bedroom door. “Now you be quiet, okay? I need to go get you some water. I’ll be right back.”

I left the bedroom thinking that having a conversation with a dog like it was an actual person might mean I needed to get a life. I’d just filled the bowl full of water when the front door flew open so fast it crashed into the wall behind it, causing me to jump and slosh the contents of the bowl all down the front of my silk blouse.

A second later it slammed shut, followed by a loud, “Devon!”

“Jeez, will you relax,” I muttered, yanking a wad of paper towels off the holder to try and soak up some of the water that was falling down my front. “I’m right here.”

My eyes had been pointed down at my drenched top, so focused on my task that I hadn’t caught the fiery, determined expression on Collin’s face as he continued toward the kitchen until he was right on me. I let out a startled gasp when his hand suddenly shot into my line of sight, snatching the paper towels out of my grip.

“What the hell?” I blinked and looked up to find his face only inches from mine. My heart rate spiked at the close proximity. My skin began to tingle, and I stumbled back on my heels to try and create some distance. “What’s going on? What’s wrong?”

With every step I took back, he followed until I was pinned against the kitchen counter. Collin’s hands bracketed my hips, giving me no room for escape. His voice was gruff and rumbly as he declared, “This shit ends.” Then dipped his face so we were nose to nose and growled, “Today.”

The sudden burning sensation in my lungs alerted me to the fact that I’d been holding my breath. Pulling in some much-needed oxygen, I stuttered, “W-what?”

Collin ran the tip of his nose along mine and the sensation made my entire body melt. My knees threatened to buckle and my head went loopy. “Uh… w-what are y-you doing?”

“I’m sick and fucking tired of you freezing me out.”

Okay, well, those words were enough to chase the warm, gooey feeling in my belly away. I put my hands to his chest and pushed, but it was like trying to move a wall. “Collin—” I spoke in a low, warning tone.

Unfortunately, he didn’t care that I wanted him to step back. He wasn’t finished. And what he said next was a massive hit to that steel-reinforced wall I’d been working to build around myself. “I miss touching you.”

Well damn.

At the feel of his lips sliding along my cheek, my eyes fluttered closed. “I miss holding you whenever the hell I want,” he whispered against the shell of my ear, causing me to tremble. “You’ve been giving me the silent treatment for too goddamned long.”

“C-Collin…” That time I spoke his name in a completely different tone. Needy, pleading, almost desperate. “I don’t… what’s happening right now?”

I could have sworn his tongue darted out and flicked my earlobe. “What’s it feel like?”

“I—”

Then the moment was broken by a sharp, yappy bark that was coming from my bedroom.

“Oh shit.”

Collin’s entire body jerked back. “The fuck was that?”

“Uh… Collin. It’s—”

Before I could get the words out, he was on the move, rounding the counter that separated the kitchen and living space, and heading down the hall toward my room. “Collin, wait,” I panted, chasing after him. “I can totally explain!”

He had the door thrown open as I hit the mouth of the hall, and I knew, by his reaction, he’d found the source of the noise when I was about two feet away.

“Holy fuck!” He stumbled back and hit the wall. “Jesus Christ! What the hell is that?!” he shouted, still moving backward along the wall. His terror-filled eyes were on my poor puppy as she trotted out and followed after him. “Shit! It’s moving! Devon, get me a broom or baseball bat or something to kill it with!”

“No!” I rushed down the rest of the hall and skirted past Collin, scooping my precious baby off the floor and holding her close. “Don’t you dare!”

“Jesus, Devon, don’t touch that thing! It could have rabies or something.”

My eyes narrowed in a vicious glare. “She doesn’t have rabies. And she’s not a thing. She’s a puppy.” I cuddled her trembling body close and tucked her under my chin. “And stop yelling. You’re scaring her.”

He stood frozen for several seconds before finally asking, “Are you kidding? That’s not a dog, Dev. That’s some sort of rodent.”

Holding on to my shaking dog with one arm, I reached out and punched Collin with the other. “She is not. She’s a cross between a Chihuahua and a Boston Terrier.”

His eyes got wide as he looked from my dog to me. “Bullshit!”

Okay, so he wasn’t completely off the mark. “The people at the animal shelter think she might have a little American Hairless Terrier in her, too.”

“The pound?” he asked incredulously. “You adopted this thing?”

“Stop calling her a thing,” I ground out. “Her name is Pogo.”

Pogo?!”

I smiled down at her when she reached up and licked my jaw again. “It’s because she looks like she’s bouncing on a pogo stick when she walks.”

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. I stood to walk a few feet away, only to turn back toward her. Each movement was fueled by my sudden frustration. I hadn’t thought about, looked at, or touched another girl since Aurora. For her to say that when this entire time she’d been with him pissed me off more than I could begin to describe.

I told myself this was where I should leave her for the night, on a bad note, like we had left our last conversations . . . but when had I ever been able to leave her?

I dropped down in front of her to look directly into her eyes so she could see the honesty that poured through every aggravated word. “What other girls, Aurora? There have been no other girls since you, because I couldn’t get past you. You are the only girl I have refused to tell anyone about because I never wanted to share even the thought of you. I would have given anything to make that night continue—anything to come back to the States and have you there waiting for me. Now that you’re in front of me again, I want nothing more than to remind you over and over again what that night was like. I want to make you forget every other guy, because the thought of you with anyone else has a rage burning inside me that I hate more than you’ll ever understand. It is a constant struggle not to pull you into my arms and keep you. But despite all of that, I owe Declan my life. I hate myself for wanting what is his, and I would never forgive myself if he ever looked at me with the betrayal that goes with the guilt I already feel.”

Her mouth slowly parted as the weight of my words crashed down on her. Confusion, awe, and denial lingered in her eyes.

“I told you I see you, so I see what you’re doing. You’re spouting off bullshit to protect yourself. I get it, because I’m doing it, too. Like before, I’ve been trying to give you every reason to walk away from me before I take you and never let you go. That guilt that you’re feeling just being near me, I feel it. That pain of being so close and keeping yourself from what you need, I feel that, too. If you hurt, then I hurt. And this hurts, because it feels like I need you to fucking breathe, and you’re just out of my reach.”

A shaky breath tumbled from her mouth as indecision settled on her face. Want, need, guilt . . .

Everything I felt, played out for me to see.

“Damn it, Aurora, I see it. I can see everything you’re fighting, but just say it. Fucking say it so I don’t feel like I’m the only one losing my goddamn mind trying to keep myself from you.”

“The only one?” a sharp, disbelieving laugh burst from her. “But like you just said, Jentry, you love him. I love him. This is so much more complicated than finally finding you again! I thought you were gone. I thought I would never see you again. I don’t know how to navigate this now that you’re right here! And like before, you’re constantly pushing me away and confusing me more than ever.”

“Because like I told you that first night, a guy like me shouldn’t be able to stain your kind of good. But that night— fuck, Aurora, you destroyed me. I have never been the same after it. And now I don’t know what to do because you’re with Declan when you should have been mine!”

“Then stop challenging me like all I am is a game to you!”

“A game?” I cupped her slender neck in one of my hands and brushed my thumb across her bottom lip as I leaned closer. “This is not a game. It’s not about wanting what I can’t have. It’s about wanting the girl who makes me feel like I’m touching heaven. It’s about wanting the girl who makes it easier to breathe because she looks at me like I’m something more than I am. It’s about needing the only girl who has made me believe that I deserve something as beautiful as her even though I know I can only ruin her.”
